Arrival and reveal
The approach holds back the full panorama, then releases it when the residence opens to the valley.
WORK · CONCEPT DESIGN · SIDEMEN, BALI
From a hillside site in Sidemen, DALLEAU shaped a fully serviced private retreat around one proposition: turn an exceptional landscape into a destination in its own right.
Concept design · Site and product direction by François Dalleau
When the address does not create the demand, the concept must create the reason to make the journey.

Location can capture existing demand. A strong concept can create a new reason to travel.
THE PRODUCT IDEA
Location remains decisive. Some projects buy into an established market. Others begin with a site whose landscape is strong enough to support a distinct experience, then align the target guest, residence, service model and arrival around that advantage.
In Sidemen, the opportunity was to combine a rare place with a concept precise enough to make the journey part of the appeal.
THE SITE
The site looks across rice terraces toward a broad volcanic horizon. Rather than treating the landscape as a backdrop, the concept made it the organising asset for arrival, shared time, privacy and the rhythm of the stay.
The residence was conceived to preserve distance and calm while adding the shelter, comfort and service depth expected by an international high-end guest.
DESIGN DIRECTION
The direction deliberately contrasts a restrained, almost monolithic architecture with the softness and scale of the landscape. Dark frames, stone, concrete and warm timber create a protected interior edge without competing with the view.
Panoramic living spaces, a low pool terrace and a glazed sauna turn the landscape into a sequence of daily experiences, not a single photograph.

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE
The approach holds back the full panorama, then releases it when the residence opens to the valley.
Living, dining, pool and outdoor lounge form one continuous social edge for a family or private group.
Suites and quiet rooms protect sleep, intimacy and distance from shared activity without losing the landscape.
Kitchen, staff, storage, laundry, transport and maintenance routes support the experience without taking over the guest journey.
TARGET STAY
The target was a high-end family or private group choosing several days of calm, privacy and service around a singular landscape.
The concept brings private accommodation, shared spaces, pool, sauna, meals, housekeeping, transport and on-site support into one coherent multi-day stay.
Service was not an amenity added after the architecture. It was part of the concept from the beginning, shaping back-of-house routes, storage, arrival, privacy and maintenance.
A private multi-day stay built around distance, calm and a singular outlook.
On-site support, meals, housekeeping, transport and maintenance planned as one system.
Shared moments and retreat are designed as complementary, not competing, conditions.
A strong identity is balanced with operational discipline, maintainability and credible ageing.
PRODUCT INTELLIGENCE
Define the guest who will choose Sidemen for the experience, not simply accept it as an alternative address.
Use the landscape, arrival, shared horizon and material contrast to create a stay that belongs to this site.
Make staff, meals, housekeeping, transport and maintenance work without intruding on the private experience.
Balance a premium-positioned experience with proportionate construction and operating complexity, maintainability and materials that can age credibly in Bali.
DALLEAU'S ROLE
François Dalleau identified the site's view as the central product asset, defined the target stay and developed the initial site, product, service and design direction for DALLEAU.
The work shown here presents that concept: what would make the destination desirable, how the architecture would frame it and what the service model needed to support.
THE DESIGN EQUATION
DALLEAU can begin with the site, define the target and form the product concept before the programme, cost and appointed team become fixed.
