DALLEAU Atelier

Same room.
Different brief.

Both can photograph well. The Atelier-informed version is coordinated around light, air, quiet, privacy, materials, control and operation before decisions become expensive to change.

Applied research and development desk for how private residences feel, perform and adapt.

Illustrative concept of a private bedroom with a conventional villa brief, a flat ceiling and general downlighting. Illustrative concept of the same bedroom with coordinated layered lighting, material hierarchy and local bedside control.

Six transformations in the same room

Conventional brief

One general lighting plan.

White ceiling, direct downlights and no separately resolved evening or night condition.

Atelier response

Four conditions, not one scene.

Daylight, task, evening and sleep-period conditions are briefed separately, coordinated with specialists and checked in use.

Why it matters

Warm light alone is not a strategy.

Timing, intensity, direction, duration and sources visible from the bed all affect the result.

Light by day, darkness by night

Project decisions are confirmed through specialist review, full-scale mock-ups and commissioning.

Evidence and project use

Three pairs of questions keep evidence, interpretation and decision separate.

What do we know?

What can this project decide?

Separate the finding from the brief. A coherent direction may become a project question, target or full-scale mock-up.

What did the study find?

What did it not prove?

Record the setting, population and method, then state the limit plainly. A controlled result is not automatically a lasting residential outcome.

What is established?

What still requires site validation?

Use stronger evidence directly where appropriate. Climate, use, specialist scopes and commissioning still determine the project response.

Where the protocols act

Each stage resolves a different owner question.

The project proceeds when the relevant decision, evidence and responsibility are explicit.

  1. 01

    Land and feasibility

Site evidence, operating assumptions and material red flags are recorded before a land or concept recommendation.

  2. 02

    Household brief

Owner use, guest patterns, privacy, staff routes, retreat and service modes are resolved before the programme hardens.

  3. 03

    Concept and coordinated design

Performance questions become criteria, specialist scopes and mock-up requirements.

  4. 04

    Procurement and construction

Tender, approvals, variations and hold points keep the decision basis visible while work proceeds.

  5. 05

    Commissioning and opening

The residence is tested, tuned, documented and prepared for operation before release.

  6. 06

    30-day, seasonal and annual learning

Operating observations, maintenance and POE update the Building Passport and future decisions.

Inside the mandate

Three public engagements. One internal method.

The nine protocols sit behind the Private Brief, Feasibility Study and Full Development Mandate. They are activated according to the site, household, risk and project stage.

Founding library

Research that changes the brief.

Study Notes explain what the evidence can support. Methods Notes show how it can inform a project brief.

Evidence note Each item states what the evidence can and cannot support.

Study Note

Light by day, darkness by night

Residential lighting is better treated as a sequence: useful light by day, a deliberate reduction before bed and darkness during the sleep period.

Evidence and boundaries

What we know. What remains uncertain.

Evidence labels describe maturity. Application labels describe what kind of statement DALLEAU is making. Neither is a certification or a promise of human outcome.

Established evidence

Authoritative guidance, standards, systematic reviews or multiple converging human studies.

Growing evidence

Several credible studies, still dependent on population, setting, duration or method.

Emerging research

Promising findings with material limitations.

Research question

A plausible question for project testing or monitoring.

Evidence enters the brief as guidance, a project target or a question for local validation.

Start with the project

Bring the right questions into the project early.
